Screen Properties
This page lets you specify how the MS-DOS application is displayed on the video screen.
|
Options in the Screen Properties box |
|
Usage |
Selecting Full Screen displays the program using the entire display area. If you mark Window, then you may choose the Initial size of the application window. Default is usually the best option for games. Default uses the program's instructions for the number of lines displayed. |
|
Window |
Choose whether to display a toolbar and/or use the previous Win95 settings. |
|
Performance |
Fast ROM emulation enables Vx D emulation of selected video ROM services. This speeds up display and refresh, but may cause problems writing text to the screen. |
Miscellaneous Properties
The Miscellaneous properties screen lets you specify various details about running the MS-DOS program.
See the following illustration!
|
Options in the Miscellaneous Properties box |
|
Foreground |
Lets the screen saver work when the program is active. For action and other input-intensive games, this doesn't have much effect. For games that are more panoramic or that require you to sit and think, you'll want to clear this or adjust the screen saver's timer or the screen saver may come up during your game. |
|
Background |
Prevents the program from using system resources when not active. This doesn't apply to often to games. |
|
Idle sensitivity |
This slider determines how long Windows allows the program to be idle before redirecting CPU resources elsewhere. The correct setting various with the application. Low sensitivity will let the program sit longer. |
|
Mouse
&
Exclusive mode |
QuickEdit allows you to use the mouse to select text (for cut or copy commands) in the DOS window. Don't tick this if the game uses a mouse.
Exclusive mode grants control of the mouse to the game, meaning that it is not available to Windows. If you will be switching back and forth between a DOS application and Windows - don't tick this box. |
|
Termination |
Mark this to display a warning when you try to close a running program |
|
Other |
Fast pasting enables Windows to use a faster method pasting information into a program. This causes problems with many older DOS programs, unless necessary - don't tick the box. |
|
Windows shortcut keys |
Enable/disable shortcut keys for Windows when the program is running. These are only a problem if your game uses one or more of these combinations for its own purposes. If this happens, either disable the Windows shortcut here or reconfigure the game's keyboard controls.

When you have the game configured to your liking return to the Program tab sheet and select Read-only to set the application to work according to these settings, and not the way you last closed it.
These property sheets are the first place you should come if you have problems with a game. They act as a mediator between you and DOS. You will sometimes still need to go into DOS, but Windows 95 has lessened the number of times you will have to do this.
