| Yearning for past that never was
This time of year, with the holiday season behind us and a whole new year just begun, is tailor-made for thinking about the past. In fact, reminiscing with family and friends about "the good old days" is almost a holiday requirement. But it occurs to me that the past is overrated. While I can be as nostalgic as the next guy, the present is pretty darn good. After all, we all have our nice, shiny new gifts to play with -- except, of course, the ones we have already broken or lost. And it's a new year, full of promise and hope -- and another birthday somewhere ahead with cake and ice cream and more presents. Now I can see how adults -- especially parents -- get all misty-eyed and reflective during the holidays. After all, Christmas morning is great, especially if you're 10 years old and there is a 10-foot stack of elaborately wrapped packages with your name on them under the tree.
